Charlotte Ann Schmaltz

Charlotte Ann Schmaltz, 87, of Baroda went to her heavenly home on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.

A funeral service will be held 11 AM on Friday, May 15, 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church of Glendora, 1733 W. Glendora Rd., Buchanan, MI 49107 with Reverend Jonathan Liebich officiating. Friends may meet with the family from 10-11 AM on Friday, prior to the service. Burial will be in Ruggles Cemetery, Baroda. Memorial contributions may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church of Glendora. Charlotte was born on October 27, 1938 in Galien the daughter of the late Rheinhold and Hertha “Hattie” (Skala) Backus. She was born into a large, loving family. They grew up on a farm and each helped with daily farm life. On September 21, 1957 she married Arlyn Schmaltz and he preceded her in death on January 11, 2001. Charlotte was a member at Trinity Lutheran Church of Glendora. She opened her own ceramic studio, The D.E.B. Ceramic Studio. Charlote was blessed with a full and happy life. Many memories were made around the family pond where they hosted yearly fish frys.

Survivors include her children: Brian (Kim) Schmaltz and Deanna (Dale) Robson; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Paul “Mike” (Betty) Backus, Bonnie Weich, Warren (Sandy) Backus, and Carol (Maurice) McMichael.

Charlotte was also preceded in death by her son, Eric Schmaltz; one grandson; brothers and sisters: Alice Backus, Shirley Backus, Arnold Backus, Wilma Freehling, Harold Backus, Barbara Sebasty, and Elaine Bell.
