David Garth Taylor, 75, of Harbert passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at his home.

Garth was born on November 3, 1949 in Minneapolis, MN the son of the late David and Lynn (Smith) Taylor. On June 10, 1984 he married the former Theresa “Sue” Hollis. He retired from a 20+ year career as founder/chief executive officer of a non-profit consulting firm in Chicago after receiving a PhD from the University of Chicago, and teaching there for several years. He served seven years on the Jefferson Awards Committee, a program to recognize excellence in live theater in Chicago. Right out of college, he worked for a year as the musical director for a theater company in Minneapolis.

Garth founded the School of American Music in 2012 along with two other board members and a volunteer executive director. He was a visionary leader, a passionate advocate for music education, and a tireless supporter of local talent. He believed deeply in the transformative power of music and built the school to ensure that people of all ages and backgrounds could access its joy and meaning. In addition to playing and performing guitar, Garth was involved in composing music and writing curriculum for teaching guitar.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Sue Taylor; son, Blake Taylor; sister: Shannan (Alex Sagewalker) Taylor; and brother, Robin Taylor.

Arrangements are entrusted to Pike Funeral and Cremation Services, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy., Bridgman.
