Doug was born on May 20, 1956 in Grand Rapids the son of the late Ellis and Doris (VanderZouwen) VanderPloeg. He had a love for the outdoors and a curiosity that led him to master anything that captured his interest. An avid fisherman, hunter, and boating enthusiast, he especially loved spending time on the water and learning everything he could about boats — even earning his Captain’s License.
He proudly worked for the Benton Harbor Water Treatment Department, where he was known for his knowledge and dedication. Doug enjoyed attending fishing and boat shows, was a member of the Southwest Michigan Steelheaders, Ducks Unlimited, and a life member of the North American Fishing Club. He also cherished traveling to South Dakota for church camp over the years.
Doug had a playful spirit and loved teasing others just as much as he enjoyed being teased back. Beneath his humor was a truly loving and soft heart that touched many people. He also found joy in simple pleasures, including Christmas shopping and finding the perfect gifts for those he cared about. Doug will be remembered for his kindness, his laughter, and the genuine love he shared with family and friends.
Survivors include his siblings: Keith VanderPloeg, Phyllis VanderPloeg, Jon VanderPloeg, and Myra (Fritz) Dornan; five nieces and nephews and five grand nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are entrusted to Pike Funeral and Cremation Services, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy, Bridgman.
