Elwyn “Sonny” Gene Heyn, 85, passed from this world on December 7, 2013.

Friends may meet with the family rom 10-11 AM Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013 at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy, Bridgman. At 11 AM there will be a time of celebrating Sonny’s life and sharing our memories together. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bridgman. Online condolences accepted at www.PikeFH.com

Sonny was born on April 20, 1928 to late Ferdinand and Lillian (Groth) Heyn in Bridgman, Michigan where he lived his entire life. He was a graduate of Bridgman High School and a star All State basketball player on their 1945 and 1946 State Championship teams. He was an Army veteran serving his country stationed in Japan after he graduated from high school. Sonny also attended Western Michigan University but left during his junior year due to a catastrophic head injury on the basketball court. He was a carpenter and master handyman by trade and helped with renovations and repairs for folks around the Bridgman area.

Sonny is survived by his sister, Wilda Ackerman of Bridgman, and his brother, William Heyn of Naples, Florida. He is survived by nieces, Fay Groh, Susan Ackerman, Marnie Heyn, Jill Heyn, Jan Cubacub and Jody Prunty. Also surviving are nephews, Robert Ackerman, Donald Ackerman and Grover Heyn and many great nieces and great nephews.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, his twin sister, Ellen Rose (Sis) Heyn, brothers, Donald Heyn and Ronald Heyn. Sonny was a kind and compassionate soul who lovingly and unselfishly took care of his mother and twin sister prior to their deaths.
