Giles Owen “Matt”Mathews, 75, of Bridgman passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph.

A memorial service will be held 2 PM Saturday, October 18 at Riverview Park Christian Church, St. Joseph. Friends may meet with the family from 1 PM until the time of the service at church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Association.

Mr. Mathews was born June 25, 1933 in Cassopolis the son of the late John and Bernice (Ward) Mathews. He was in the US Navy for 10 years, serving on the USS Oglethorpe. On June 21, 1953 he married the former Joyce Wichner. Matt was a member of Riverview Park Christian Church in St. Joseph. He owned and operated Gilway General Construction for 40 years and was the former manager at Warren Dunes. Matt was a loving husband and father and loved to watch his grandkids play sports. In his younger days, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, and watching the Chicago Bears.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Joyce; two children – David Mathews of Bridgman and Kelley (William) Carlee of Paw Paw; two grandsons – Matthew and Alexander Carlee; and a sister, Sandy (Hugh) Boyer of Gulf Port, Mississippi.
