Harvey was born November 11, 1919, in Chicago to the late Robert and Maria (Perry) Armstrong. He proudly served his country during World War II with the 4th Division of the United States Marine Corps. He participated in landings on Roynamur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He received a Purple Heart Medal as a result of injury on Iwo Jima. On June 5, 1948, he married the former Eleanor Akerhielm in Chicago. Harvey and Eleanor traveled around the world and loved to go camping with their two sons, Tom and Glenn.
