James Stevenson Thomas, 75, of Harbert, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 16, 2025, in the care of his loving family.
Jim was born on September 1, 1949, in Chicago, the son of J. Benedict Thomas and Marie (Lipscomb) Thomas. He grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, where he also established and ran his own house painting business for many years. Later in life, drawn by his deep love of Lake Michigan, he moved both himself and his business to Michigan, where he continued working and enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
On December 3, 2013, Jim married Karen (Johnsen) Grayson in Bridgman, Michigan. They were happily married for over a decade and shared many adventures together, including traveling often and enjoying an active life near the lake. He was previously married and had two daughters, Lena and Molly.
Jim was a self-employed painting contractor and a proud, hard-working man known for doing things right. He earned the nickname “Git-’er-done Jim” for his can-do spirit and commitment to completing every task with care and excellence.
Active and adventurous, Jim loved golfing, biking, tennis, swimming, kayaking, hiking, eating out, and live music. He had a gift for conversation and connection -- he loved talking to people, debating politics, and introducing friends to one another. His warmth, humor, and big personality made an impression wherever he went.
Jim is survived by his wife, Karen; his daughters: Lena Thomas and Molly Thomas; his brothers: Ben (Betty) Thomas, David Thomas, and Peter (Bekeeta) Thomas and their sons: Joey and Jake. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Carrie (Troy) Gentz and their children: Emily, Eli, and Ruby; Sally Merkle and her children: Cedrik and Stella; Tammy Grayson and her children: Evan and Ashton; and Matthew Grayson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Robert Thomas, Mark Thomas, and John Thomas.
A celebration of life will be held on June 15, 2025, from 1–4 p.m. at Lakeside Inn, 15251 Lakeshore Rd., Lakeside, MI 49116. Please bring stories to share about Jim.
