Joel Matthew Trapp

Joel Matthew Trapp, 63, of Baroda passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2026 at Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

A memorial service will be held 11 AM on Friday, July 10, 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church of Glendora, 1733 W. Glendora Road, Buchanan, MI 49107, with Reverend Jonathan Liebich officiating. Friends may meet with the family from 5-7 PM on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Pike Funeral and Cremation Services, The Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy., Bridgman, MI 49106. Final resting place will be Ruggles Cemetery, Baroda. Memorial contributions may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church – Radio Broadcast; or Worship Anew, 5 Martin Luther Drive, Ft. Joel was born on November 30, 1962 in St. Joseph the son of LaMar and LaVerne (Schmaltz) Trapp. Although he weighed under 4 pounds, he was determined to make his way into the world. Through his parents’ nurturing, he was very smart and was reading the newspaper by the age of 6.

Joel attended Lakeshore High School and graduated in 1981. While there, he enjoyed playing saxophone in the school band and participating in the drama club. Following high school, Joel attended Lake Michigan College and earned his associate’s degree. Joel enjoyed reading and was knowledgeable in a wide variety of topics.

For nearly 40 years, Joel was employed by UPS and was known as a “bell ringer” … punching in just in the nick of time but was known for his strong work ethic.

Survivors include his mother, LaVerne Trapp; aunts, uncles, and a host of cousins and friends.

Joel was preceded in death by his father, LaMar Trapp; and grandparents: Paul and Elizabeth Trapp, and Julius and Lydia Schmaltz.

Joel’s quirkiness and ready smile endeared him to many. He will be missed.
