He was known to most as Jr. but also Chief, Morrie and Uncle Jr. He was a citizen of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. His uncle gave him the name Waban Si, which means “Morning Spirit” and he certainly was a seize the day, up early type of guy.
Jr. was born on September 14, 1945 in Watervliet the son of Morris and Luella (Wesaw) Lewis, Sr.; the brother of Paul Dahlke, Darlene Tate, Mary and Bonnie Drake; the father of Tama Lewis; grandfather of Chris (Brandi), Ryan and David Robinson; great grandfather of Michael, Violet, Tesa Mae, Zola, Kyra, Navia, Gabrielle, Nova and Forrest who is also known as Paul. He loved all his family and friends but especially his dog, Gracie, and his cats known as “the kids”.
Jr. was known for his love of sports, a lifelong University of Michigan fan “Go Blue”, spending time with his family and friends and his laugh and his contagious smile.
Jr. was always at a local sporting event but Friday nights in the Fall were mostly reserved for the Hartford Indians football games with his best friend and partner in crime, Dave Bulat. He used to tell everyone not to plan anything on Saturdays in the Fall because he would be home watching Michigan and unable to attend.
Jr. was a talented athlete as well. He played baseball and basketball in the Summer and in high school. Later on he became an avid bowler, practicing his approach in the mirror, being prepared for every lane condition with his Hammer and Nail bowling balls. He won multiple league champion titles and other awards before having to hang up his bowling shoes.
Jr. was a jokester at heart. He was always teasing, joking with and lovingly poking fun at people. Kindness and generosity were his default settings. He would give you the shirt off his back and his last $5 if he thought you needed it more than he did.
Jr. was the true definition of a gentleman and a decent human being. He was an example of goodness to all. He was loved by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. He will be missed by many but not more than his close family and friends.
