Robert John "Jack" Greendonner

Robert John "Jack" Greendonner, 88, of Freedom Village in Holland, and formerly Stevensville, MI, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at home with his family by his side.

Jack was born May 29, 1938, in Buffalo, New York, to George and Gertrude (Ryszka) Greendonner. He was a 1956 graduate of Flushing High School in New York. He graduated from Olivet College in 1960. On August 24, 1961, he married Martha Nolph and they shared 62 years together.

A gathering of friends and family will be held from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Friday, August 7, at Pike Funeral and Cremation Services, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy, Bridgman. Burial will be private. A second gathering will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 8, at Freedom Village.

Jack lived a life of service and faith. He taught history, government, and journalism at Lakeshore High School, where he inspired generations of students. His love of reading led to 40 years of service on the Lincoln Township Library Board, while his passion for Scouting saw him mentoring countless young people over 25 years as an assistant Boy Scout leader. He advised the Driftwood yearbook as it evolved from graph paper and grease pencils to digital photography. His community service continued through his 25-year tenure on the Shoreline Water and Sewage Treatment Authority, his work with Habitat for Humanity’s Thursday crew, and his volunteer driving for the senior center. Jack was an avid photographer, an accomplished baker who passed his skills to his children and grandchildren, a puzzle solver, a mystery reader, and a meticulous trip planner whose maps and directions guided every family adventure.

After 50 years in Stevensville, Jack and Marty made their home at Freedom Village in Holland, where Jack volunteered at Woodside Elementary School and the Freedom Village Library. In recent years, he could usually be found with a book in hand, playing cards, or spending time with his neighbors on Saturday evenings. The family is deeply grateful to the staff of Freedom Village for the exceptional kindness, compassion, and care they shared with Jack.

Jack is survived by his children: James (Mary Beth) Greendonner and Heidi (Eric) Southard; grandchildren: Michael (Emily) Greendonner, David (Kelsey) Greendonner, Emma Southard, and Carl Southard; four great-grandchildren; and brother, James Greendonner. Jack was preceded in death by his infant son Timothy, his parents, his wife Martha, and his brother Richard.
